The Dr. Watkins House marker tells the story of Dr. John Watkins, one of the early physicians in this part of what was then the Mississippi Territory. His life connected medicine, public service, education, Claiborne, Burnt Corn, and the Old Federal Road corridor.

DR. WATKINS HOUSE
This two and a half story structure with unusual lower front extension was the home of Dr. John Watkins. Dr. Watkins was one of the first and few physicians in this part of the Mississippi Territory. Before coming to Burnt Corn he lived in Claiborne. In addition to being a doctor, he served in the Alabama House of Representatives and Senate and was trustee of the Burnt Corn Male Academy.

Old Federal Road Project
This marker is part of the Old Federal Road Project, documenting historical markers, places, roads, crossings, stage stops, and communities tied to Alabama’s early travel routes. Dr. Watkins’ story shows how the Old Federal Road area was more than just a road. It connected homes, schools, public service, medicine, and communities during Alabama’s earliest years.
