According to the information sourced from the linked document:

Hopewell Church was established in 1864 and was known as the first site for Blacks to worship together in their community. Its twin towers depict an architectural example of the early 20th Century Black church Construction.

In 1864 when Hopewell was established it stood as a foundation for the Black Community. It has great significance because the Blacks and Whites had to worship together, then Hopewell became the sight for their people to worship and pray freely. This one story building was constructed by the men in the community and holds its same form today.

Hopewell was originally Hopewell AME Zion and was founded around 1850. The Whites moved towards the West of town thus making the distance for the Blacks to great travel on foot to get to church. Thus they needed a place to worship of their own.
