Near Bermuda, Alabama, this Old Federal Road marker points to the former home area of Jeremiah Austill, remembered for his part in the famous Canoe Fight on the Alabama River during the Creek Indian War. The marker also preserves the tragic story of his first wife, Sarah, whose death shows how dangerous life could be for families living along Alabama’s early frontier.

OLD FEDERAL ROAD

Near Bermuda was the home of Jeremiah Austill, who won fame in the canoe fight on the Alabama River during the Creek Indian War. His first wife, Sarah, died of injuries from falling off a fence during an Indian raid.

Erected in 1998 by Monroe County Heritage Museums and the J. L. Bedsole Foundation.
