This marker tells the story of Garrett Longmire’s early trading center, tavern, stage stop, and the first post office in Conecuh County. Located near Burnt Corn, this site was once an important stop along the early roads of Alabama Territory.

Longmire Stagecoach Stop
& First Post Office
in Conecuh County
Garrett Longmire had an early trading center, tavern and stage stop near here. He served as the postmaster when his store became a post office in 1818, one of the earliest in what was then the Alabama Territory. The Burnt Corn Post Office served as a distribution point for mail to many early post offices in south Alabama. In December of 1820, Longmire became Justice of the Conecuh County Court.
Old Federal Road Project
This stop is part of my Old Federal Road Project, where I am documenting the historic route and the markers connected to it across Alabama. Long before modern highways, places like Longmire’s stage stop helped move people, mail, supplies, and news across the Alabama Territory.
