A Cumberland Presbyterian church named Mt. Pleasant was organized about 1821 by Rev. William James Moore, a missionary fro Elk Presbytery of Tennessee. Renamed Mount Carmel in 1827. It provided early leadership for the AL. Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. This present structure was built in 1852. Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church PCUS was formed in 1973 and shared this building with Mount Carmel, which was defunct by 1900. Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church was defunct by 1935 and was dissolved in 1963. A Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association was formed in 1972 to care for the Churchyard.

This church appears to have been identical to the Adams Grove Presbyterian Church which was built at Sardis Al a year later in 1853 and still stands today but is not in as good condition.
