Prairie Mission

Prairie Mission is also known by Prairie Mission School, and Prairie Mission Institute as well as Prairie Mission Church.

Prairie Mission is the only one of six Presbyterian Schools that once stood in Wilcox County. It was founded by the Freedman’s Board of the United Presbyterian Church in 1894. It was built to educate as many as 300 children. Originally it had dormitories for both male and female students. It held classes for children grades one through nine up through the mid 1950’s. At that time students from grades 7 – 9 were sent to a mission school at Miller’s Ferry. Prairie Mission like other Black Schools was closed in the late 1960’s at the end of segregation in the Alabama School System.
