5 Historic Churches of Monroe County You Should See

I’ve photographed over 1,600 churches across Alabama’s Black Belt — and I’m not done yet. Many of these churches are tucked down dirt roads, lost in thickets, or hidden behind time itself. This page features six of my favorite churches in Monroe County, each with a story worth remembering.

1. Bell’s Landing Presbyterian Church (Tinela)

Bell’s Landing Presbyterian Church was founded in 1819. The Current Building was built in 1927. Located at Tinela only a couple of miles South of the Monroe/ Wilcox County Line. 31.80838, -87.39725

2. Old Scotland Presbyterian Church (Tunnel Springs)

Built in 1837

Located in the beautifully Red Hills of Northern Monroe County. 31.66745, -87.27372

3. Philadelphia Baptist Church. (Tunnel Springs)

Philadelphia Baptist Church is located in Tunnel Springs Alabama.

4. New Purchase C.M.E. (Beatrice)

Located on AL. Hwy. 21 at Beatrice. 31.73346, -87.20500

This church was built in 1935 from bricks purchased from a mill at Kalem, AL. Mr. Tom Ivey once owned that mill. Mr. Ivey sold the mill to a company in Georgia and they closed it and had it dismantled. Some sources say it was in close proximity of the current Scotch Plywood mill presently located at Kalem.

5. Antioch Baptist Church (Pine Orchard)

Organized in 1840.

Located on County Road 42 about 3.5 Miles West of Pine Orchard. 31.64222, -87.18870
